Mysore style-instruction was developed by Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, who learned it from his teacher, who in turn, learned it from his teacher. This is the traditional way of learning yoga, a line of knowledge and experience passed energetically between teacher to student.
For the last 6 years, Kaz Castillo has been a student of Sharath Jois, the grandson of Pattabhi Jois and the current director of the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga, she is authoroized by him to teach the method. With verbal and physical guidance from a teacher, students learn to work independently at their own pace, learning the ashtanga series one posture at a time. Learning Ashtanga yoga traditionally, not only increases flexibility, strength and body awareness, but also cultivates a steady breath and mind.
Mysore style-instruction is ideal for beginners in ashtanga yoga. It allows practitioners to have the benefit of one-on-one instruction based on the student’s individual needs, while enjoying the collective energy of a room. To feel the full benefits of practice, we recommend that beginners commit to at least a month of practice.
